Stage 19 Preview
Where: In the Aosta Valley region of Italy taking in various Alpine passes.
Weather: Looks set to be warm and sunny.
Stage Type: Mountain stage with almost 5,000m of altitude gain.
Climbs: Three first-category climbs provide the bulk of the day’s work – Col Tzecore (16.0km at 7.7%, max. 15%), Col Saint-Pantaléon (16.5km at 7.2%, max. 12%) and Col de Joux (15.1km at 6.9%, max. 12%).
Start: A short descent and then straight up the third-category Croce Serra (11.5km at 4.5%) which should allow a big break full of good climbers – as well as satellite riders for the GC favourites – to get clear.
Finish: The second-category climb to Antagnod (9.5km at 4.5%, max. 11%) is crested with 5km to go before a short descent, a levelling off just before the flamme rouge and then a slight rise to the line over cobblestones.
Stage suits: GC favourites and excellent climbers (and descenders) not in GC contention.
Breakaway chances: Below 50/50 but depends on how early it kicks off amongst the favourites.
What will happen?: At some point, EF Education EasyPost will drive a hard tempo to set up an attack by Richard Carapaz. Given how many climbing metres the day has, any break will need a big lead before this happens to stay away which tilts the stage towards a win for the GC favourites.
Stage 19 Contenders
Richard Carapaz (2/1; 3.0) looks the strongest climber in the race and is rightly the favourite to lift the Trofeo Senza Fine in Rome. But he needs to take time which starts here.
Giulio Pellizzari (8/1; 9.0) has been freed after the abandonment of Primož Roglič and is looking a million dollars. The young Italian can rise even high than the seventh he currently sits on GC.
Isaac del Toro (8/1; 9.0) was gapped on the Mortirolo but his excellent descending skills allowed him to get back on and ultimately win the stage. He’ll be needing those skills again in spades you’d think but he’s defied the odds once – can he do it again?
Derek Gee (18/1; 19.0) will be eyeing up a podium place in Rome and is looking better and better.
For the breakaway
Lorenzo Fortunato (16/1; 17.0) will be up the road to secure the maglia azzurra which often means winning the stage becomes a stretch too far, however, he was the best rider in the break on stage 16 before gifting it to his teammate, Christian Scaroni (80/1; 81.0). Wout Poels (16/1; 17.0) is another option for XDS Astana and has been a short price for a few of these stages yet hasn’t challenged which is off-putting.
Romain Bardet (22/1; 23.0) was denied a great win on stage 17 and has two more chances in his final grand tour. Team Picnic PostNL teammate, Max Poole (40/1; 41.0), is exactly 8mins down which is enough to be allowed up the road though top 10 places would then be threatened and could start a domino effect up the GC. It’s a risky move to burn those matches early but it would be great to see him try.
Michael Storer (33/1; 34.0) is in a similar situation to Poole having lost 4mins to his rivals on the Mortirolo stage caused as much by his poor descending than his climbing, something which won’t help him here.
Tom Pidcock (80/1; 81.0) is of course excellent on downhills and may roll the dice by going up the road where he’d surely be one of the best climbers too.
Afonso Eulálio (60/1; 61.0) was first over the Mortirolo from the break on stage 17 and looks strong but will primarily be up the road as a satellite rider for his Bahrain-Victorious leader, Damiano Caruso (70/1; 71.0).
Nicolas Prodhomme (66/1; 67.0) stayed with the favourites group for a long way up the Mortirolo but will surely be in the break this time.
Embret Svestad-Bårdseng (200/1; 201.0) was also in the main group until attacks started flying and is probably worth a fun interest again at big odds.
Stage 19 Bets
Climbing and descending – the winning rider will have to be very good at both. Whilst a win for the GC group is the most likely, let’s have a few breakaway options too as this Giro hasn’t always followed the script.

Max Poole 1pt win and 3 places @40/1
Nicolas Prodhomme 0.5pts win and 3 places @66/1 – 1st
