Stage 13 – Rovigo > Vicenza (180km)

Fri 23rd May | KM0 1305 CET

Profile

Stage 13 Preview

Where: In the Veneto region of northeast Italy, ending with a 20km circuit around Vicenza.

Weather: High teens with the possibility of showers but clearing up as the day goes on.

Stage Type: Hilly, though flat then hilly would be a better description with almost all the climbing in the final 50km.

Climbs: Three fourth-category climbs in the final third of the race will be decisive. First San Giovanni in Monte which is roughly 5km at 7% and then, with just 20km to go, up to the Sanctuary of Monte Berico – the final 800m of which averages 9% – followed by an unclassified rise (2.5km at 5%) before a second time up Monte Berico to the finish line.

Start: Flat and then a fourth-category climb (4km at 6%) after 30km which should help the break form if it hasn’t already.

Finish: The final 50km of this stage are not straightforward at all and the Monte Berico climb ought to rule out most of the sprinters.

Stage suits: Puncheurs, GC contenders and classics sprinters.

Breakaway chances: Low. The terrain for the first 30km isn’t conducive to a big, strong break getting away and there ought to be enough teams who like the look of the finish to control.

What will happen?: Teams with a punchy finisher will pull back the break and set up a reduced group sprint. GC favourites will also get involved as gaps can be made on the final climb and even the stage win could be in play.

Stage 13 Contenders

Mads Pedersen (9/2; 5.5) is looking monster strong but is he vulnerable on this final rise by a lighter, punchier rider? He may even try to repay Mathias Vaček (18/1; 19.0) for some of his excellent work earlier in the race, however Pedersen will be keen to bag more ciclamino points. Lidl-Trek have won four stages so far and this is a great chance for a fifth.

Wout van Aert (15/2; 8.5) looks very much back to something like his best and the mood will be very high in the Visma Lease a Bike camp after Olav Kooij’s win.

Tom Pidcock (12/1; 13.0) has made the top 5 three times and this is another opportunity for the Brit who has an excellent sprint on a rising gradient.

Corbin Strong (20/1; 21.0) is more suited to this finish than the flat stuff on stage 12 though went missing on the similar stage finish into Matera.

Andrea Vendrame (40/1; 41.0) is a fast finisher who can get over hills and so too his Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale teammate, Dorian Godon (45/1; 46.0), who’s been relatively quiet so far though was in good shape at the Volta a Catalunya.

GC favourites

Isaac del Toro (11/2; 6.5) is looking very classy in pink and appears to have a sprint to match any of his GC rivals. After three seconds, the young Mexican probably deserves a stage win and this finish is very good for him.

Primož Roglič (16/1; 17.0) would ordinarily be a shoo-in for a finish like this but he’s been strangely reluctant to get involved in sprints for wins and bonuses, and his Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe team, which looks so good on paper, has been poor. Is he struggling or biding his time for the final week?

Juan Ayuso (20/1; 21.0) says his knee ‘hurts a lot’ after the fall on stage 9 which is a reason to swerve him as a selection for the time being. He remains, however, the bookies favourite to win the Giro.

Giulio Ciccone (25/1; 26.0) is another who should love the final and if he’s latched on to his teammates, Vaček and Pedersen, could start the climb in a good position.

Stage 13 Bets

This one is in the balance – will the stronger sprinters hold on or will it be taken by the GC favourites?

Let’s have one of each. It’s difficult to look past Isaac del Toro who is really flying – how easily did he put Ciccone and Pidcock away in the sprint for second on stage 11? And let’s stick with Wout van Aert who owes us nothing after his win in Siena and could definitely double up here.

Isaac del Toro 1pt win @11/2 – 3rd

Wout van Aert 1pt win @15/2 – 2nd
