Stage 5 – Caen > Caen ITT (33.0km)
Wed 9th July | First Rider 1305 CEST
Profile
Stage 5 Preview
Where: A looping circuit from and back to the centre of Caen in Normandy.
Weather: Sunny and warm with a northerly breeze that will strengthen through the afternoon.
Stage Type: Individual Time Trial.
Route characteristics: Once out of town, the roads are wide and flat though they are exposed, so if the wind is changeable, some riders may get more favourable conditions than others.
Stage suits: A 33km flat parcours is definitely in the favour of time trial specialists.
Stage 5 Contenders
Remco Evenepoel (2/9; 1.22) is the reigning World, Olympic and Belgian time trial champion and convincingly beat all of his main rivals on a shorter TT a month ago at the Critérium du Dauphiné. Evenepoel sits 58secs behind Pogačar on GC and this is a big chance to claw a chunk of that back. He did have a fall on Monday but seemed fine afterwards and showed no ill-effects on stage 4 so, barring accidents, should win stage 5.
Jonas Vingegaard (17/2; 9.5) came second behind Evenepoel in the Dauphiné and has some standout performance on the TT bike, especially at the Tour de France. He’s looking good and we should see another strong showing here.
Tadej Pogačar (12/1; 13.0) disappointed in the Dauphiné TT, finishing 48secs behind Evenepoel and 28secs behind Vingegaard, and alarm bells were ringing over his form. He then went on to destroy everyone in the mountains and put those doubts well and truly to bed. Expect a better performance against the clock here though challenging for the win looks a stretch.
Edoardo Affini (33/1; 34.0) took the European title last year and, as a specialist, the top 5 is a realistic goal.
Primož Roglič (50/1; 51.0) very nearly beat Josh Tarling in a shorter TT at the Giro d’Italia and his pedigree in this discipline is not in doubt. A top 5 isn’t out the question.
Selected others (top 3 prices)
João Almeida (5/1; 6.0) is an excellent time triallist and looks to be in the form of his life.
Selected others (top 10 prices)
Kévin Vauquelin (4/9; 1.44) comes in off the back of a runners-up spot at the French nationals and a good result here could put him within touching distance of the yellow jersey.
Florian Lipowitz (Evs; 2.0) impressed at the Dauphiné and looked good in the tricky stage 2 finish.
Bruno Armirail (5/4; 2.25) won the French TT title for a third time last week and was consistently excellent at the Dauphiné.
Iván Romeo (5/2; 3.5) is the under-23 world TT champion, won the Spanish road race last week and a stage at the Dauphiné. No doubt his grand tour debut has been a shock to the system but a top 10 here is possible.
Stage 5 Bets
It’s a shame that time trial specialists Filippo Ganna and Stefan Bissegger both crashed out on stage 1 as it makes this an even bigger open goal for Remco Evenepoel, but at 2/9 there’s no value in the outright market. So, let’s look elsewhere:
João Almeida has been flying this season and could squeak into the Top 3 at a decent price, and Bruno Armirail, who’s already been active in breaks this Tour, can back up his recent form with a Top 10.
João Almeida 1pt Top 3 @5/1 - 8th
Bruno Armirail 1pt Top 10 @5/4 - 4th
